WELCOME NOTE

BY H.E. HAKAINDE HICHELEMA

PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA

The present generation of Africa have the instructive responsibility to utilize arts, cultural narratives, and music to shape our civilization and build modern societies through shared growth and prosperity. The Government of the Republic of Zambia and the people of this great nation finds it refreshing to welcome thousands of young people to incubate, plan and accelerate mechanisms to drive a new African wealth creation phenomenon with African Arts, culture, and music at the center.

Here in Lusaka, the uniqueness of our National Museum exhibiting Zambian archeological finds and contemporary arts expresses our desire to develop our indigenous arts. The Freedom statue commemorates in all its magnificent artwork Zambia's struggle for independence. It is a pure and brilliant artwork. Yet, there is a pressing urgency to advance the conversation on African Arts and Culture, being mere artifacts kept at museums, recounted literature dotted on pages in books, to the modernization of our societies and the creation of indigenous wealth. Finally, this BIG conversation involving African Arts, Music, and Culture long expected, is taking place in Lusaka under the theme, "Harnessing The Dividends Of The African Creative Industry Through Investments In Youth Talents." Zambia will play host to curious minds, experts, practitioners, academics, government representatives, civil servants, international civil servants, young people, civil society groups, students and non-governmental organizations in what has been speculated to be the biggest African conversation on Arts in present times. As distinctively noted in the timeless words of the Ghanaian poet and literature giant, Ayi Kwei Armah, in his celebrated piece "the beautiful ones are not yet born", Zambia does recognise that African Arts is a mammoth resource to the Continent yet untapped. We are conscious that the efforts of the Zambian people are meaningless without a total integration of all the energies and brain power of the Continent. We need to curate a central African thesis on the developing subject of African's Culture, Music, and Arts – we are better building a unionized and amalgamated implementation plan than parading a Zambian plan, a Ghanaian plan, an Angolan plan, amongst others. Our efforts need to collaborate at all levels to improve shared learning and shared growth. We praise the efforts of the All-Africa Students Union for championing this conversation and for electing the beautiful city of Lusaka to host this historic event. We welcome you to the rich ambiance of our hospitality, the pleasantries of our delicious meals, the nostalgia of our warmth, and the abundance of Zambian smiles you will meet in our walkways, streets, conference rooms, and public squares. May the African intellect and industry win in this decade. Thank You.
